The YMCA of the Rock River Valley is giving away free swimming lessons to children in the Rockford area.

According to this WREX report, the "Y" will be providing a swim scholarship to 100 Rockford area children.

Those lessons will take place this fall over 6 weeks. The scholarships will be given out on an income based or situational basis.

The "Y's" hope is to change the statistic of drowning being the second leading cause of accidental death for kids. They also hope that these lesson will be just the beginning for their students.

YMCA of Rock River Valley Executive Director Trisha Tousant said "They [the children] can move on to a swim team, they can swim at the 'Y', they can swim at the high schools, and often get scholarships and swim in college."
