A comparatively short run and split mythology-standalone balance gave an inkling FOX’s X-Files revival might not offer the kind of closure fans have hoped after twenty years, and it may be longer yet before we have any real answers. X-Files creator Chris Carter confirms the revival series will end on a cliffhanger, but what format might pick up the ball down the line?

Speaking with E! Online, Carter addressed questions of potential continuation to the franchise, noting oft-repeated rhetoric he’d already plotted a potential third movie for Mulder and Scully. As far as the immediate six-episode season on FOX, well, don’t exactly expect the iconic agents to get the peaceful ending they’ve earned:

I don’t think [that]’s it for Mulder and Scully, but I have to say, there’s no guarantee that we’re coming back. So, while I see Mulder and Scully and stories down the way, we end up on a very big cliff … I always play it as if coming to the end of the season (or take the end of a short series), that it could or might be the end.

Certainly Fox will be looking into a possible continuation, what with the Sunday premiere’s ratings having jumped to a total of 20.29 million viewers, though all involved have maintained that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s schedules would dictate future X-Files. So, how about that movie, then?

Do I have an idea for a third movie? Yes. Has someone from the features department over there been in contact with me? Surprisingly, yes. But that is a long way from saying there will be a third film.

Fair enough, Mr. Carter. In the meantime, check out our review of the first three episodes (the third of which you can catch this coming Monday), stay tuned for the latest, and prepare for Mulder and Scully to leave us in the lurch all over again.
