Having a new baby is one of the most wonderful things that can happen to a person in their lifetime. And speaking of wonderful, so is this new technology.

The day my daughter arrived was the day I discovered what unconditional love was. I was one of the lucky ones. My daughter was born healthy, and with no complications. It doesn't always go that way though. Some babies need extra care when they are born. Thank goodness for NICUs.

The Special Care Nursery at Swedish American Hospital realizes what a stressful time it can be for parents, who envisioned having a healthy baby stay in their room with them all the time, but suddenly have to be separated from them. Often mom's can't even come see their babies right away because they are recovering from the delivery. This is where SwedishAmerican has really stepped up.

They have implemented secure webcams so parents can see their babies from anywhere. The new NIC-View cameras were installed this week. They enable parents to have access to their baby 24/7 even when they can't be at the bedside. I can't imagine the level of comfort this must bring new parents. Especially if their babies are in the unit for an extended period of time and they have to go home and continue caring for their other children. Other family members can even see the new babies via webcam if the parents want them to have access. How cool would it be to see your new grandbaby right away if you live thousands of miles away?

Swede's is only the 3rd hospital in Illinois to implement this new technology.
