On April 9, 2015, Belvidere's Summerfield Zoo was devastated by the tornadoes that ripped through the Stateline, a year later, the family zoo is set to reopen for it's 2016 season.

April 23rd will be the opening day. Summerfield Zoo announced on it's Facebook Page that it will devote the entire weekend to it's 2016 season opening activities:

Crocus and daffodil bulbs are popping up outside the lemur habitat...the arctic foxes are starting to loose their winter hair...Betty the groundhog is getting up earlier and staying up later! And our opening weekend for the 2016 season has been set! Put a visit to the zoo on your calendar for April 23 & 24!!!!

The Summerfield Zoo is home to a large variety of exotic animals, ranging from reindeer and monkeys to camels and mountain lions.

As we reported last year, the zoo took a direct hit from the tornado that destroyed a large potion of the zoo including a number of fences, sheds, and the main building, which was a compete loss.

With the help of volunteers and donations, rebuilding and expansion efforts have taken place over the past year and the zoo is now ready to open up for it's 2016.

Ticket information and hours can be found on the zoo's website.

Proceeds from admission charges go to taking care and feeding the the animals.
