You've heard the old saying "misery loves company." Recently, we spotlighted the Top 10 miserable towns in Northern Illinois, now we turn our attention to our neighbors to the north.

Most Illinoisans would argue they escape to Wisconsin on the weekend to leave the misery of Illinois behind, but Wisconsin does have it's own problems. As you travel north, make sure you don't end up in one of Wisconsin's most miserable towns. Shockingly, one of our neighbors just to the north of Rockford landed on the list at #4.

Unlike Illinois, where most of the most miserable towns statewide are far away from Northern Illinois, in Wisconsin, nine out of the ten of the most miserable towns were all in the southern end of the state.

169 Wisconsin towns with populations of 2000 or more were ranked. So, how do measure if your favorite Wisconsin town qualifies for the misery index? The data crunched by roadsnacks.com included:

  • Percentage of residents with a college degree
  • Average commute times
  • Unemployment rates
  • Cost of living
  • % of married couples
  • % of home owners
  • Poverty rate

From the data, they came up with the list of the most miserable places to live in Wisconsin. From that list, I pulled the Top 10 from Southern Wisconsin.
