It's been almost ten years since Rockford Park District has enforced smoking rules at attractions, parks, and venues. Is it time for a complete 'no smoking' ban at all their properties?

According to rrstar.com, Rockford Park District could soon be 100% smoke free.

As of today the Rockford Park District smoking policy is:

Furthermore, smoking is prohibited:

1. On or within 50 feet of playgrounds owned or operated by the District.

2. On or within 50 feet of outdoor bleachers on District property.

3. In or within 50 feet of any outdoor concession are owned or operated by the District.

4. Within a minimum distance of 50 feet from entrances, exits, windows that open, and ventilation intakes that serve an enclosed area where smoking is prohibited, so as to ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter the area through entrances, exits, open windows, or other means.

Changing to completely banning smoking on Park District property isn't a bad idea. Despite the current policy, smoking could be disastrous at many forest preserves like Atwood Park. One lit cigarette butt could set fire and destroy hundreds of acres of forest preserve and residential homes.

The smoking ban will not impact Park District golf courses.

Rockford Register Star reports the Rockford Park District board will meet next to talk more about this possible smoking ban.
