If you love the Rockford Icehogs, here's your chance to match skills against your favorite players for free at the Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens in Rockford.

Grab your skates and bring the family out to the Eclipse Lagoon at the Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens on N 2nd Street in Rockford from 6 to 7 p.m. for the conservatory's "Skate with the Icehogs" event! This event is free and open to the public, and in the event that the lagoon's ice conditions are not safe for skating, the event will be moved to the ice indoors at the Riverview Ice House.

If you have never skated on the Eclipse Lagoon before, here are a few things you should know before hitting the ice:

  • Hockey is available at the north end of the lagoon only. Goals are provided and available on a first come, first served basis.
  • Heated restrooms are available at the outdoor pavilion.
  • Bring your own skates; no rentals on site.
  • Skate at your own risk; no Rockford Park District supervision provided.
  • Wear appropriate clothing for outdoor weather.
  • Adults are responsible for the children under their care.
  • Participants may not carry infants or children while skating.
  • Skaters accept responsibility for knowing the range of their ability while on skates, and skating within the limits of that ability.
