Some Rockford veterans have started a program called Operation Fallen Flags with the goal of removing and replacing old, tattered flags around the city for free. This type of program is a first for the United States, and organizers are hoping the mission spreads quickly throughout the nation.

Operation Fallen Flags officially kicked off with the unveiling of the "Flagship 1 Glory Truck" at Veterans Memorial Hall on Saturday, and local veterans are already uniting in hope and remembrance due to its existence.

According to the Rockford Register Star,

The program deploys Flag Vets to homes and businesses to replace torn, tattered or lost flags. The flag exchange is free, and those who request a new flag through the program are given a certificate thanking them for replacing the flag.

Flags collected will be honored during a retiring ceremony 7 p.m. on Flag Day, June 14, at the LZ Peace Memorial, 6799 Guilford Road.

If you would like to request a flag replacement, call 815-962-1040.
