Winter is starting make its presence in Rockford and some people are going to be without the items most take for granted when it gets cold outside. Area homeless shelters need more than just warm clothing.

I spoke with three different Rockford homeless shelters today and asked each what specific items they need donated in the wintertime. Some of the items I would have never thought about donating.

Carpenter's Place - provides the tools necessary for rebuilding the lives of the homeless.

Items Needed: Warm winter clothing, socks, hand warmers, chapstick, "basic items we take for granted."

MELD at Trinity House Shelter - Helping young moms, pregnant or parenting, between the ages of 17 and 21, and their children.

Items Needed: Coats for teen and young adult moms, infants, and toddlers. Socks and gloves for infants and toddlers. Blankets.

Rockford Rescue Mission - Offers short-term housing for up to 130 homeless men.

Items Needed: Hand warmers, Waterproof gloves, chapstick, cough drops, toilet paper (urgent).
