Dixon police are in the process of investigating a report of a student with a gun on school property on Wednesday morning.

Dixon police issued a statement Wednesday afternoon to let the public know that shortly before 10 a.m., Dixon Public Schools Administration and police were investigating a report of a 'despondent student' who possibly brought a handgun onto school property.

School officials said that they initially received information that there was a student armed with a handgun in a vehicle outside of Dixon High School.

School officials and police determined the student was no longer on school property. As a precaution, police put additional security measures into place, and Dixon Police Officers began searching for the student, who was unable to be located at DHS.

However, 15 minutes later, Dixon Police did locate the student at a residence in Dixon. Police located:

  • one handgun
  • two rifles

These three items were seized by police. The student was transported to KSB hospital in Dixon for evaluation. Criminal charges are pending.

Dixon Police Chief Langloss said:

I couldn’t be more impressed with how quickly this information was communicated to school authorities and our school resource officer. They took immediate action to ensure the safety of our students and the despondent young man. We have taken these guns off of the streets and no one was injured.” Dixon Police currently have School Resource Officers assigned to Dixon High School and Reagan Middle School. Langloss added, “By having a police officer in the school who knows the kids and has multiple sources of information, we were able to locate this student immediately. This incident exemplifies how important it is to have a great working relationship with the school and to have officers assigned at the school.

Dixon Superintendent Margo Empen said:

I am very proud of the work of our staff and our police department. The quick action of all involved ensured the safety of our students and staff. We are heavily invested in proactive security measures and work hard to provide a safe environment for our students. I am proud of and want to give credit to the students who provided information and acted quickly in the best interest of their fellow classmates.

Police also note that there is no information to suggest the despondent student planned to harm anyone at the school. No further information is available at this time.
