Lee County has a secret gem of grassland that not only has returned the land back to how it was before Illinois was settled but also encouraged the population of bison.

In fact more bison have been born in Lee County this year than years past.

WREX reported from the Nachusa Grassland that 14 bison calves were born this past spring bringing up their population to 44 bison.

Their growth has helped other wildlife return to the area including vols, mice an swallows.

If you'd like to see nature's wonder you can hike the Nachsua Grasslands to catch glimpses of the bison and to see how the Illinois prairie was like before it was settled. It's only about a little over an hours drive from Rockford.
