Sad news today as we learned that Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy has passed away at the age of 83 earlier today.

The New York Times reported that Nimoy, who who played the part of Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek series and in many of the feature length theatrical movies, was admitted to the hospital last week due to severe chest pains.

The Times reported that last year, Nimy had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

According to the Times, Nimoy's wife Susan Nimoy confirmed the death while confirming COPD as the official cause of his death.

Along with William Shatner, Nimoy starred on the Star Trek series which ran from 1967 to 1969 on CBS. He would later portray the part of "Mr. Spock" an a number of the theatrical Star Trek films that were released in the 70's and 80's
