Lady Antebellum to Sing National Anthem at 2016 Kentucky Derby
Lady Antebellum will sing the national anthem at the upcoming 2016 Kentucky Derby on May 7.
The seven-time Grammy winning trio have been on a break recently, and their special performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" will mark their first public performance since wrapping up their last tour.
“Each year we work to honor the Kentucky Derby’s rich traditions and celebrate the best of American culture,” says Kevin Flanery, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack, in a press release. “As an internationally-recognized musical group, Lady Antebellum is the perfect fit to uphold the Derby’s traditions and we are thrilled for them to perform our national anthem for the millions of Derby viewers and fans around the world.”
Lady Antebellum are the eighth to perform the national anthem since Churchill Downs began the tradition in 2009, joining other notable artists including Josh Groban, Jo Dee Messina, Martina McBride, Mary J. Blige, Jordin Sparks, Rascal Flatts and LeAnn Rimes.
Lady A's performance will take place in the Kentucky Derby Winner’s Circle just after 5PM ET, immediately prior to the 142nd running of the race, and will air live to the more than 170,000 fans who attend the Kentucky Derby, as well beaming into homes all over the world as part of NBC's televised coverage of the event.
Since launching their first album in 2008, the group have become one of the top acts in country music. Their most recent album, 747, scored three more hit singles; “Bartender,” “Freestyle” and “Long Stretch of Love.” The subsequent Wheels Up Tour was also a huge success. In August of 2015 they announced they would take a break after completing that tour, and singer Charles Kelley has filled that time by releasing a solo album, The Driver, while Hillary Scott has been working on a gospel project with her family. After their performance at the Kentucky Derby, they'll return to the stage in late May, kicking off a summer filled with festival appearances.
