Requests to golf with a dog have become more frequent lately for the Rockford Park District, so they decided to give "Canine and Clubs" a try starting this Sunday at Elliot Golf Course.

Canine and Clubs is exactly what it sounds like, golfers will be able to bring one dog to golf the course with them for the regular green fees plus a $5 dog fee. (Unless the dog has a Canine Corners tag, then the fee is waived.)

So far this initiative will only take place at Elliot Golf Course on Lyford Road on Sunday, October 9 and Sunday, October 16 after 2 p.m. If things go well, the program may be expanded to other Rockford courses and additional days and times.

To be able to particpate, golfers must follow these rule listed on the Golf Rockford website:

  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times during the round of golf
  • Dog is sole responsibility of owner
  • Players with dog must be 18 or older
  • Dogs less than 6 months of age are prohibited
  • One dog per golfer
  • Leash length recommended – 6’ to 8’ feet
  • Must show proof of current rabies vaccination
  • If a dog is off leash or disrupting any other golfer with barking or other bad behavior, golf course staff may ask the owner and dog to leave
  • Owners are responsible for picking up and disposing of their dog’s waste
  • No spiked, pinch, or choke-type collars
  • Dogs may not ride in a golf cart
  • Dogs are not allowed on practice areas or greens
