Think straight and be safe this holiday weekend especially if you plan to hit the highways.

WQAD-TV reports that during last year’s Memorial Day weekend, Illinois state troopers arrested 147 drunk drivers.

Illinois State Police have announced they will be keeping an eye out again conducting random roadside safety checks along with roving safety patrols. Police will be looking for:

  • Impaired drivers
  • Individuals not wearing their seat-belts
  • Speeding Drivers
  • Drivers using their cell phones

WQAD TV reports that the AAA estimates 33 million drivers will travel over the extended weekend which is the highest number in 10 years.

State Police estimate that throughout the weekend, motorists will see hundreds of seat belt enforcement zones and other law enforcement patrols looking for seat belt violators and impaired drivers as part of the national Click It Or Ticket campaign.

Most people travel safely, but unfortunately there are those who don't and your best protection against a drunk driver is to have your seat belt on. Police say, you still maybe injured, but at least you will be injured inside the vehicle as opposed to being ejected from the vehicle.

Drive safe and have a fun Memorial Day weekend.
