Hold your horses, the brakes have been put on the Costco project in Loves Park.

Back in October, we reported that Costco was planning on opening a new location in Loves Park in 2019. However, there is a now a problem.  According to a report from WIFR, the project is being put on hold by the Winnebago County Board.

The problem is with the $1.7 million host tax agreement.

County Board Chairman Frank Haney issued a letter to county board members on Thursday night citing the following issues with the host agreement:

  • concerns from several nearby area mayors
  • development of other long-term economic projects
  • millions of dollars Loves Park faces in deferred capital.

The project is not dead by any means, but some things need to be worked out.

The county board will discuss the issue and try to work things out at it's December 13th meeting.
