Canaan Smith is doing all he can to help fight cancer. The "Hole in a Bottle" singer has announced a new charitable initiative, Smash Cancer, which benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Every night on stage, Smith smashes a drum, but what started out as an impulse to smash something has turned into a much greater cause for the singer.

“I didn’t realize what was happening, all of a sudden I’m clutching this drum I just bashed,” he recalls in a press release.

The audience were into it, and as a result, Smith decided to do it night after night. Eventually, the act of smashing a drum each evening struck him with the idea to make it as a way to benefit a charity he holds dear.

“While it was fun destroying that drum at the end of our set, we didn’t know what to do with it,” Smith admits. “To me, connecting with fans has always been the most important element in our live show so we thought; let’s get it to the people who would appreciate it the most. Fans totally latched on which made me realize we could turn this into something positive and benefit a charity I’ve been passionate about for a while. It’s been crazy and rewarding to see the reaction. I’m just thankful and humbled to do what I love and make music all while being able to give back.”

Smith autographs each drum and auctions it off for charity after every show. So far, he has raised more than $20,000 for St. Jude, which treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
