Beverly Hillbillies fans have lost a true darling. Actress Donna Douglas has died at the age of 81. She was best known for portraying Elly May Clampett, on the television series "The Beverly Hillbillies"

Douglas appeared in commercials and TV shows in the 1950s and '60s. But she is best known for her role in The Beverly Hillbillies that ran from 1962 to 1971.

The Clarion Ledger reports that Donna Douglas was chosen for the part of Elly May from more than 500 actresses.

She says she felt at ease playing the role because, like her character, she grew up a poor country tomboy. The experience came in handy when she was asked during her audition to milk a goat."I had milked cows before," she says. "I figured they were equipped the same, so I just went on over and did it."

Who could ever forget that famous Beverly Hillbillies episode when Elly May got her first boyfriend.

Douglas' career began with beauty pageants. She was also a former Miss Baton Rouge and Miss New Orleans.

Elly May, you will be missed. Thanks for all the memories that live on reruns.
