An update on story from earlier today. According to Rockford police, one person is dead after a two car accident that occurred on Y Blvd and N 2nd Street this morning.

46-year-old George White has been charged with aggravated DUI leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death, and aggravated driving after revocation.

The accident happened early this morning in the southbound lanes of N 2nd Street, close to the ramp to the Whitman Street Bridge. The police found that driver of a white Chevy Impala, George White, was heading north on Longwood when he merged on to N. 2nd Street. It was at that time he lost control of his vehicle.

Police reports indicate that White drove over two medians striking a guard rail before going airborne and landing on a a red pick-up truck heading south on 251. The driver of the red pick-up truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly after, White fled the scene on foot, and taken into police custody a short time later.

As reported this morning, both the northbound and southbound lanes on N 2nd street in the area of the accident were closed until about 2:30 this afternoon.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office has identified the truck driver killed in this morning's accident as 57 year-old David Logterman. An autopsy shows he died of chest injuries.
