Danville, Illinois is 2nd on Stacker.com's list of 10 Metros with the Oldest Homes. The list includes cities like Pittsfield (Massachusetts), Utica (New York), Altoona (Pennsylvania), and Buffalo (New York). How did stacker.com put together this list? On their site they say...

"The data in this ranking is from the Census Bureau's 2020 5-year American Community Survey. Metros are ranked based on the percentage of total housing units in the region that were built in 1949 or earlier."

Now as far as Danville goes, Danville is located a couple of hours straight south of Chicago, right on the Illinois and Indiana border. Danville is loaded with historic homes, 44.5% of the homes in Danville were built before 1949. On the site they say...

"The city's oldest residential neighborhoods are next to the downtown area. The city's zoning laws aim to maintain the unique character of this area by stipulating the architectural styles. These styles include Italianate, Queen Anne, Craftsman, Prairie, Greek Revival, Tudor, and American Foursquare."

It's not shocking that a lot of the towns on this list are on the East Coast, that is where the history of this country is. To see a town from Illinois on the list is slightly surprising, but it just goes to show that Danville had a lot of growth pre-1950, and they have been able to maintain that history despite population and growth declines over the past couple of decades.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
