If you have an cell phone with AT&T service, you might have received a 911 alert on Wednesday.

The alert was to let phone users know that 911 service was down.  AT&T says the outage was nationwide, but not every user was affected or received the alert message. So, if you tried to dial 911 from your mobile device, you would not have been able to.  AT&T tweeted:

Verizon customers in parts of the country also experienced a similar outage. Even though 911 is the most common form of instantly requesting emergency services, it is always a good idea to program the phone numbers of local police departments in your phone, because you never know.
