Let's say you are Christmas shopping and you return to your car in the mall parking lot and you notice real $100 bill on your windshield, would you pop out of your car to get it?
Chances are...YES!

You might think it was gift from a stranger, or perhaps an armored car tipped over and the your windshield. Well I hate to break it to you, it's probably a scam that could cost you!

No cases of this scam have been reported in Rockford, but this scam has been popping up Maryland. According to authorities, potential for this kind of scam, particularly around the holidays, may be spreading.

ABC NEWS reports that authorities are warning shoppers to be on the lookout for this situation, especially over the holidays. Here's how it works:

The driver exits the car with the door open to grab the bill, a thief then has the opportunity to steal the vehicle.

Karen Straughn, Maryland Assistant Attorney General - Consumer Protection, wants the public to be aware of it, as reported by ABC affiliate WJLA-TV in Washington. Straughn said an unknown resident, during a public information safety session in Baltimore County, informed her of one incident, but Straughn said she has not seen a police report about it.

"But because it's something of a frightening nature, if this happens to someone, we hope they will take the proper precautions," Straughn told ABC News.
